UvA scientists receive NWO TOP funding

22 November 2016

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded funding from its TOP-programme to six UvA-scientists in the fields of astronomy, informatics and mathematics.

Daring research

The grants that were awarded are intended for innovating and daring scientific research with great scientific urgency in the fields of astronomy, informatics and/or mathematics. There are two types of TOP-funding: for senior scientists with a proven track record in the past 10 years and for young researchers in the early stages of their scientific career.

Senior scientist grant recipients

  • Dr Ulle Endriss, Institute for Logic, Language and Computation: Customisable Collective Choice
  • Prof. Alex de Koter, Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy: Massive stars in low-metallicity environments: the progenitors of massive black holes
  • Prof. Rob Stevenson, Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics: New challenges in adaptivity

Early career scientist grant recipients

  • Dr Benno van den Berg, Institute for Logic, Language and Computation: The Computational Content of Homotopy Type Theory
  • Dr Jean-Michel D├ęsert, Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy: Composition of Exoplanet Atmospheres Using Ground-Based Transmission Spectroscopy
  • Dr Viresh Patel, Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics: Hamilton cycles in sparse graphs
