Pavel Zorin-Kranich, has won the Stieltjes Phd Prize with his thesis 'Ergodic theorems for polynomials in nilpotent groups'. The Stieltjes Prize is an annual prize handed out by the Dutch research school WONDER for the best PhD thesis in mathematics.
While there has always been one prize winner per year, it was the opinion of the jury for the Stieltjes Prize 2013 that there were so many theses in 2013 of very high quality that it would be justified to award two prizes for that year.
One of the winners is Pavel Zorin-Kranich, who defended his thesis "Ergodic theorems for polynomials in nilpotent groups" on 12 September 2013 at the UvA. Promotor was prof. dr. Ale Jan Homburg, copromotor dr. Tanja Eisner.
The other winner is Benjamin Sanderse, who defended his thesis "Energy- conserving discretization methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Application to the simulation of wind-turbine wakes" on 19 March 2013 at TU Eindhoven.
