According to the national review committee Mathematics, the quality of the research at Korteweg de Vries Institute is excellent. The committee stated this in their report.
The committee concludes that in all disciplines the institute has strong and visible researchers. This leads to the qualification “excellent”, overall, but in particular for the group Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics which “stands out as exceptional”.
The committee is also very positive about the hiring strategy of the institute, which has an element of expediency and opportunism and aims at attracting young talented people. According to the committee the institute is well positioned for the future with its quality of the research staff and a good age balance. The committee sees good opportunities for the future related to the collaboration with the VU “where synergy and strengths can be gained”.
The quality assessment was conducted by the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). For the period of 2009-2014 the mathematics departments of ten Dutch universities were assessed on research quality, viability and relevance to society. On a scale from 1 to 4, UvA received a 1 'excellent' on the research quality and a 2 'very good' on the other aspects. The independent review committee for Dutch mathematics research 2009-2014 consisted of researchers from the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
