Title: Weyl groups, the Springer correspondence and their affine versions
In this talk, which is intended for non-specialists, I will discuss some
results which I regard as highlights in geometric representation theory.
In his famous 1978 paper, Springer gave a geometric construction of all
irreducible representations of finite Weyl groups. Later this was generalized
to representations of affine Weyl groups, a kind of infinite Coxeter groups
which act on a vector space by affine transformations. On the basis of examples
with symmetric groups and with GL(n,C), I will explain what is going on here.
