Event details of Beta Break: Jan van de Craats will discuss science of the music

Time
12:00 -13:00
Location

BètaBreak

This edition of the Beta Break is about music. Dissonants, resonants, harmonics, octaves: music is based on multiple physical and mathematical laws. But why do we like that. Do our brains like mathematical patterns? And what about other cultures where other compositions of sounds are valued?

Today it is possible to compose a musical work only by computer, the so called computational music. How to use these mathematical laws to generate new sorts of music. And will we ever get to value this kind of music as much as music composed by a human being?

All these questions are discussed during the Beta Break, illustrated by some musical amusement.
