TItle: Forensic genetics

Abstract:
I will sketch an overview of this field. I will first describe what DNA profiling at forensic laboratories such as the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) consists of, and then go into the statistics and probability theory needed for the interpretation and reporting of the obtained DNA profiling results. I will discuss several applications, especially the investigation of relatedness of individuals, database searches, and also the resolution of mixed DNA traces (containing DNA of several individuals). Along the way I will point out what my own research interests are and also discuss some legal aspects.
